Google Cloud Announces Iceberg-Native Lakehouse
In plain English
Google Cloud unveiled its next-gen cross-cloud Lakehouse platform: AI-native (Vertex AI integration built-in), Iceberg-native (first-class Iceberg support, not a compatibility layer), and multi-cloud (can query data in AWS and Azure from GCP). With this, all 3 major clouds were Iceberg-native.
Analogy
With AWS, Azure, and GCP all supporting Iceberg natively, the table format became like the USB-C of data — one standard that works everywhere, regardless of the device (cloud) you plug into.
Why it matters
This was the final seal on Iceberg's victory. When every cloud vendor supports the same open format, customers win: no lock-in, portable workloads, and a competitive market for compute tools.
